The Spaces

Opificio

Cittadellarte is housed within the premises of a decommissioned factory, the former Lanificio Trombetta, an exemplary testament to industrial archaeology in Biella's historic textile center. Overlooking the central courtyard, the heart of Cittadellarte, the three exhibition floors of the historic wool mill represent an innovative model of management and utilization of the architectural complex. This model has significantly influenced the urban restructuring of the City of Biella since the 1990s, contributing to the creation of an urban hub dedicated to culture and multidisciplinary, cross-sectoral activities serving a glocal audience.

Permanent Collection

Where once the Biellese textile tradition thrived, today the artworks of Michelangelo Pistoletto are on display. The visit begins in the attic, characterized by an inverted ship-hull ceiling, where a single work is present: Le Porte – Uffizi (2003–2016), a microcosm of society and the backbone of Cittadellarte. Descending, one encounters the first room dedicated to the genesis of the Mirror Paintings, a testament to the master's exploration of self-portraiture conducted in the 1950s. Two rooms in the same building then present a selection of works representative of the main phases of his artistic research and production: Mirror Paintings, Division and Multiplication, and Segno Arte. Other works, including the Oggetti in Meno, created during the master's artistic and philosophical practice, accompany the visitor up to the Venus of the Rags.

Universario

Inaugurated in 2021, an entire floor is finally dedicated to the Universario. This space presents the most recent phase of Pistoletto’s artistic research related to the Formula of Creation and hosts several classrooms of the Unidee Academy.

Arcipelago

This space is dedicated to the Exhibition-Laboratory Path Biella Città Arcipelago: an itinerary through numerous installations that present one or more attitudes or capabilities necessary to realize the Opera Demopratica in the territory. By viewing the maps projected onto the evocative interactive model at the entrance of the exhibition, visitors can delve into the peculiarities of the Biella area. Presented in the form of an exhibition-laboratory, it is a genuine research project that describes the best practices and characteristics inherent to the Città Arcipelago. Biella Città Arcipelago Demopratico offers the opportunity to understand the state of sustainability in the Biella area, starting from the stories of over 100 protagonists featured in the installations "Gli Atlanti dei Paraventi" distributed along the central axis. Here, citizens are involved and made participants in the design of concrete actions for their territory in synergy with institutions.

Bookshop/Store

The Cittadellarte Store offers a unique selection of products related to the activities of Cittadellarte, the Third Paradise, and the work of Michelangelo Pistoletto. The Store is open Monday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

Cervo Room

The Cervo Room is the hall of the Pistoletto Foundation where forums, events, conferences, and talks are held. Overlooking the Cervo River, the Cervo Room is part of a space renovated according to the principles of sustainable architecture. Notably, in 2010, the renovation model of this space by the Pistoletto Foundation was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale as one of the early examples of sustainable renovation.

Museum of the Present and Gallery

The Museum of the Present and the Gallery space are the large areas of the Pistoletto Foundation that host temporary exhibitions, events, and performances.

Permanent Headquarters of the Third Paradise

A few steps from the central courtyard, a second former factory houses the Third Paradise. One of the most evocative spaces, it also serves as the official headquarters of the symbol, aiming to become the center of the international network of activities directed at the responsible transformation of society. In the space adjacent to the artwork's headquarters, there are also the testimonies of all the embassies of the Third Paradise, each presenting its interpretation of the formula, the formula of creation that everyone can use. The embassies, originating from Biella, branch out across the world and, through their 240 flags, trace the path from Cittadellarte to the Third Paradise.

Hydro Space

HYDRO is a new cultural center that promotes visual and performing arts, social research, and civic cohesion. Developed as a community hub, it is the place where associations and individual citizens can express themselves, engage in dialogue, and find the right conditions to develop activities and projects, contributing to the improvement of the territory they inhabit. Since 2016, this space of the foundation has been granted in free use to the association Better Places APS. Outside, a large asphalted area has been regenerated through the planting of Paulownia, a broadleaf tree known for its ability to absorb CO2, in small gardens contained in rolling boxes. This action helps keep the urban air cleaner and cooler. To counteract the rise in urban temperatures during the summer months, one of the first examples of de-asphalting was implemented, expanding the green area, which consists of a substrate of stone, soil, and grass cover. In other asphalted areas of the space, a lightening of the surface was carried out using natural-based light paints. Additionally, the building's thermal insulation was completed with electric heat pump systems, avoiding the use of gas. Visit the website →
