“Third Paradise DMZ: Memories to Rebuild the Future”: The Trinamic Symbol Becomes a Permanent Installation Between the Two Koreas

The participatory installation "Third Paradise DMZ: Memories to Rebuild the Future," created at Camp Greaves in the Civilian Controlled Zone between South and North Korea, will become a permanent work starting December 22, 2025. The project, promoted by Cittadellarte and the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul, and curated by Valentina Buzzi and Soik Jung, involved 31 Korean civic organizations active in the Sustainable Development Goals. The entire process is recounted in the official documentary directed by Won-tae Seo, available on the YouTube channel of the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul.

Terzo paradiso

Among the most significant stages of the Third Paradise 2025 international journey, Seoul represents a pivotal moment. It is here that the Third Paradise DMZ – The Art of Demopraxy in Korea project took concrete and profoundly symbolic form, now destined to become a permanent installation.

The initiative took place at Camp Greaves, a former US military base located in Paju, now converted into an educational and cultural center and managed by the Gyeonggi-do Tourism Office. The site is located within the CCZ – Civilian Controlled Zone, near the demilitarized zone separating South and North Korea: a territory historically marked by division, transformed into a space for reflection, participation, and imagining the future.

The project, created by Cittadellarte in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul and curated by Valentina Buzzi and Soik Jung, involved 31 Korean civic organizations active in the field of the Sustainable Development Goals. This shared process gave rise to the participatory work Third Paradise DMZ: Memories to Rebuild the Future, which was exhibited this past autumn.

On December 22, 2025, a version of the work will be permanently installed: a tangible sign of dialogue, collaboration, and regeneration, rooted in an emblematic site of contemporary history and projecting new meanings into the future.

This journey is documented in the official short film Third Paradise DMZ, produced by the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul and the Pistoletto Foundation, and directed by Won-tae Seo. The film presents images, testimonies, and fragments of an artistic and social process that transforms a border into a bridge, giving voice to the people involved and the context that welcomed the work.

The documentary is available on the YouTube channel of the Italian Cultural Institute in Seoul and will also be screened on December 20 and 21 at Cittadellarte on the occasion of Rebirth Day, confirming the connection between the Korean journey and the global vision of Third Paradise.

A project that evolves from a temporary event into a permanent presence, reaffirming the role of art as a tool for Demopraxy, shared responsibility, and the transformation of places and communities.
