"Good Food For All": A Flash Mob in Brussels for the Right to Food as a Human Right
On Wednesday, January 14, a symbolic and peaceful action in front of the European Parliament brought the right to healthy, sustainable, and accessible food to the center of public debate. Cittadellarte, a partner in the "Good Food For All" project, participated in the flash mob alongside European institutional representatives, civil society organizations, and activists working on food system transitions.
A flash mob in support of the European Citizens' Initiative Good Food For All – Food is a Human Right for All took place yesterday morning in Brussels on the Esplanade of the European Parliament. The initiative aims to recognize food as a fundamental human right through binding European legislation.
The Pistoletto Foundation, a partner and supporter of the project, participated in the initiative, represented by Director Paolo Naldini, President Giuliana Setari, and Francesco Saverio Teruzzi, coordinator of the Rebirth/Third Paradise Ambassadors. Also present was Walter El Nagar, international chef and Ambassador of the Trinamic symbol.
The intentionally peaceful and inclusive action generated an opportunity for open discussion with citizens, activists, and political representatives, demonstrating how art and civic practice can activate concrete processes of democratic participation.
Indeed, alongside Cittadellarte, numerous organizations committed to food justice, sustainability, and human rights participated in the flash mob: Slow Food, Caritas Europa, Compassion in World Farming, ECVC – Via Campesina, and Noah's Ark.
The initiative also received direct support from members of the European Parliament, including Anja Hazekamp, a Dutch MEP for the Party for the Animals, and Tilly Metz, a Luxembourg MEP for the Greens/European Free Alliance group.
Also present was Annalisa Corrado, an Italian MEP and member of the ENVI Commission, who contributed to the public dialogue on the political and cultural value of the initiative.
A key figure in the mobilization was Olga Kikou, Advocacy Director at Animal Advocacy & Food Transition and EU Head of ECI Food is a Human Right for All, who reiterated the profound meaning of the initiative: "Food is a fundamental human right. We want all Europeans to have access to healthy, nutritious, humanely produced, and affordable food. This mobilization will continue until those demands are taken seriously." Her words underscored how civic mobilization remains an essential tool for putting a fair food system for people, farmers, and animals back at the center of European policies.
The Brussels flash mob was part of the broader Good Food For All initiative, born from the Second Demopractic Forum on the Right to Food promoted by Cittadellarte, which has already brought together over 200 European organizations. A project that translates the vision of Demopraxy, conceived by Paolo Naldini, into concrete action, demonstrating how art can become a tool for civic and political transformation.
Cittadellarte thus continues to operate as an active laboratory of shared practices, contributing to building a more just, sustainable, and participatory Europe, where the right to food becomes a collective responsibility.
